Anthrocon 2001 - Philadelphia, PA - July, 2001

(Thanks to Phil "Bennie" Pollard for the video work!)

I brought several new toys to Anthrocon for the dance light show. One of them is my "lightstaff", a 6 foot long staff with an electronic core running the full length of the staff, designed for pretty effects when spun.

I also brought my "Neon Anubis" costume. It's a full-body neon suit using semi-flexible neon cabling. I control the modulation of the blue and yellow segments separately. The camera had some trouble focusing on the outfit, but the effect still works. Also, in person, one sees an odd stroboscopic effect; my motion leaves POV 'trails', which is why I'm moving around so much in these videos. The camera doesn't pick that up either. (I welcome stills anybody might have taken!). The crowd seemed to enjoy it!

Both of these projects are one-of-a-kind prototypes that took months of design, experimentation, and 'hardening' (That's the hard part; what happens when you drop it/bend it too far/etc? It keeps working.), as well as consultation with an electrical engineer. I'm not really in the business of making the things, as copies would probably cost more than anybody could afford, given the time and effort involved. Thanks to everybody who's asked, though!
